Dry January, Meet Butter Zero: The Wine That Still Sold Out

The other day, I was asked to host a wine tasting at a nearby grocery store. I never turn down a tasting — after all, it’s one of the best ways to discover new wines (purely for research purposes, of course).

Before the event, the company emailed me the lineup of wines I’d be featuring. Everything looked normal… until I spotted a wine with no alcohol. Record scratch. Wait—what?

The wine was Butter Zero, a new premium non-alcoholic collection from the Butter Wine lineup, including Sparkling Rosé, Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, and Pinot Noir. With less than 0.5% alcohol and 80 calories or fewer per glass, Butter Zero promises all the flavor with none of the buzz — perfect for those who want to sip without the side effects.

I’ll admit, I was skeptical at first. Wine… without alcohol? But once the tasting began, I was pleasantly surprised. Guests were curious, excited, and genuinely enjoyed the experience. By the end of the event, we had sold a lot of wine — proof that Dry January is very much alive and well.

Moral of the story? Even a lifelong wine lover can be surprised — and sometimes, zero alcohol still equals a good time.

If you’ve never heard of Dry January, you’re not alone — unless your social feed suddenly fills with mocktails, yoga pants, and people proudly announcing they’re “doing great without wine” (sure, Jan).

Dry January is a public health campaign that encourages people to take a break from alcohol for the entire month of January. It started in 2013 with Alcohol Change UK as a simple challenge — one month, no alcohol — and has since grown into a global movement. What began with about 4,000 participants has now expanded to millions worldwide, with roughly 200,000 people officially signing up in January 2025 alone. Clearly, skipping wine for a month is having a moment.

Butter Zero is designed to feel approachable and inclusive — perfect for Dry January participants, designated drivers, or anyone who wants to sip without committing to a full pour. You’ll find them at retailers like Total Wine and online platforms such as Instacart, making them easy to grab when curiosity (or peer pressure) strikes.

And for those wondering, Butter Wines themselves are crafted in California by second-generation Napa Valley vintners John and Michele Truchard. After years of producing ultra-premium wines, they created Butter Wines to be every day, easy-to-love bottles — ideal for celebrations, casual nights in, or honestly… any day that ends in “y.”

As for me? I was surprised, skeptical, and then pleasantly entertained. The tasting was a hit, bottles moved quickly, and Dry January definitely had a hand in that success. Proof that whether it’s full-bodied or zero-proof, wine culture is evolving — and apparently, even January can be profitable.
