“A Sopranos Binge Night with Friends, Food & Wine”

There are some shows you watch quietly by yourself, and then there are the shows you watch with friends — the ones where half the fun is pausing every few minutes to say, “Do you remember this part?” The Sopranos is definitely one of those shows. It’s comfort TV wrapped in family chaos, questionable decisions, and so much good Italian food that you start wandering into your kitchen looking for a block of provolone you don’t actually own.

So here’s the idea: instead of just rewatching, make it a dinner night.

Invite your Sopranos-loving friends, put on a couple episodes, uncork some wine, and serve the kind of dishes the characters were always sitting down to — loud conversation optional but encouraged.

Because on this show, the food wasn’t just background. It was love, stress relief, celebration, apology, bribe, tradition — sometimes all in the same bowl of baked ziti.

Start Simple: The Table Spread

Put out a gabagool and cheese board — capicola, provolone, maybe some roasted peppers and olives. The kind of “just pick as you talk” spread that feels casual and instantly communal. No need to label anything. Just put it out and let everyone find what they like.

Someone will say “gabagool” incorrectly.

This is part of the experience. Let it happen.

The Heart of the Night: Pasta, Pizza, and Something from the Oven

There are a few foods that feel unmistakably Sopranos:

  • Macaroni with gravy — Paulie’s beloved red sauce pasta. Comfort in a dish.
  • Tony’s favorite baked ziti — which also happens to show up anytime anyone is going through something big. Birth, death, arguments, reconciliations — baked ziti is there for you.
  • AJ Soprano’s signature pizza order:
Double meatball, pepperoni, sausage, peppers, onions, and extra mozzarella.
A pizza with the energy of a teenager who never once worried about heartburn.

If you want to go all in, throw a steak on the grill or cast iron. It’s the “big night of talking business” meal of choice — but honestly, the baked ziti is always the star. Let it have its moment.

Round it out with a Caprese salad so you can say there were vegetables present.

Wine Like They Drank on the Show

One thing I always loved is that the wine on The Sopranos was never treated like a lecture topic. It was just there — on the table, being poured, shared, part of the conversation.

Some bottles that showed up on screen:

  • Ruffino Chianti Classico — easily the most seen. Perfect with pasta night.
  • Château Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande — for when you want to “upgrade the mood” just a little.
  • Nonino Picolit — a lovely dessert wine with cannoli or sfogliatelle.
  • And of course, plenty of Merlot — no explanation needed.

Open a few bottles, pass them around, refill glasses as needed.
No tasting notes required.

Don’t Forget Dessert

Christopher had a sweet tooth, and honestly, we get it.

  • Sfogliatelle
  • Cannoli

Buy them from a bakery if you can. If not, the freezer aisle has your back.
No guilt. Carmela would absolutely approve shortcuts that preserve your sanity.
